This series of Memory boards was inspired by the Know My Name exhibition of Australian women artists at the National Gallery of Canberra.  I have taken some of the names from the NGC's excellent website for Know My Name and also the Australian Women Artists website.

Inspired by the 'Know My Name exhibition' at the National Gallery of Canberra.

Since women artists are frequently written out of history even when they were very successful and well known during their lifetimes, I decided to make this the theme for some art pieces.  As a fellow artist pointed out to me, history is written by the victors and art books have predominantly been written by men (think Kenneth Clark, Erich Gombrich, Robert Hughes and so on) so it is up to us to write women back into focus.  I will also add that it is not only female artists that are written out of history but writers, scientists, mathematicians, physicists, composers, architects...
