The Atomic

Oil on canvas  45 x 75cm  Sold

The Atomic refers to an Italian coffee machine, and as such, is a piece of classic design from the 1950's.  This was during the grim years of the 'cold war' when people everywhere were genuinely afraid of an Atomic war.  There were 'Ban the bomb' marches in many cities across the Western world. The Italian's answer: a coffee machine!
I particularly like the form and the shadow shape of the machine.
And, given the machine's name, of course I had to put a red drape behind.

Kitchen Rules

Oil on stretched canvas 61 x 91.5 cm Unframed $750

This was an exercise in design, colour and composition.  Also, I have tilted the perspective so that the viewer is looking down on the objects.  And, with the utensils all lined up, it does remind me of a certain TV programme about cooking.

The odd sock!

Oil on plywood 65 x 95 cm Framed $850

I owe inspiration for this work in part to the Israeli artist, Avigdor Arikha.  Socks don't have much form but they are excellent shapes to play round with for creating a composition and they are a change from apples.

Snip

Oil on canvas 64 x 48 cm Framed $750

I find these different types of scissors are wonderful shapes, almost like birds: its hard not to see the blades as beaks and the screws as eyes.  I enjoyed designing this composition on the colourful tea towel.
