These four are part of an exhibition of 9 x 5 works titled My Summer of Art at The Julian Ashton Georges Heights Studio at Georges Heights.  As you can see, my idea of summer has a lot to do with sipping and slurping.

I was advised by a friend, and fellow artist,  to return to painting stripes, so here is my latest effort! I particularly like the shadow shape which provided the title.

The aim of this painting was to paint forms which are high in tone keeping the range of colours to a minimum.

With the exception of the little bowl, all the objects were chosen for their neutral tones.

I have been exploring painting in a high key.

The striped cup

This picture was painted using a very reduced range of pigment: black, white, blue and ochre.

It is interesting to see how much colour can be made from such a limited palate.

Paint brushes

I think they make a marvellous subject for still life.

Red capsicums with all their wonderful curves and colour are such a joy to paint.

Cyclamen

Flowers droop so quickly so I bought this potted Cyclamen and after I had finished the painting the plant joined my many other plants in the back yard.

Hyacinth

I am quite fond of the colours used here: white, violet and green.  And since these are the colours used by the early Suffragettes, I have included a quote from Rebecca West:

"People call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that  differentiate me from a doormat ".

And out of curiosity, I checked on the symbolic meaning of the Hyacinth.  Well, there are many meanings so I chose the one that appealed:

Hyacinths are flowers dedicated to Apollo, the Greek god of the sun who is also considered as the patron of the arts.

Pink Verbena

I bought this dear little potted Verbena as cut flowers don't last very long.  Once the painting was finished I planted the Verbena in the back garden. 

Awkward age

The model sat very briefly like this before stretching her legs out straight; probably more comfortable for her, but I loved the composition so went with my initial drawing.
