A friend collected all her empty boxes of medications and instead of throwing them out she presented them to me.  Yea, lots of fun.  I enjoy exploring all the surfaces that the inside of these boxes present.  As well as being cheap, they are nice to paint on.  I generally use gouache but sometimes mix in watercolour if I want more subtle tones. 

 

Reflection No 3

Gouache on yupo paper  29x20cm

Yupo paper is a synthetic paper that is very smooth and slow to absorb the paint.  Hence it produces some interesting effects.  Useful for the watery, reflective and distorted images on glass facades of buildings.

I have been very influenced by the shapes of the outside edges of some of the boxes and cartons, to the extent of tracing around the outside onto watercolour paper, as in this instance.  The shapes have determined my decisions on the forms within the painting.

I have drawn inspiration for these from the skylines of Seoul and Busan.

I find the shape of the packaging influences the composition.  In this case I have also taken inspiration from the reflections bounced back from the glass skins of sky scrapers.
